Are you experiencing misted windows or blown sealed units? Come over to Pelle Glazing, we’ll completely replace your double glazed windows and doors.

What causes misted double glazing?

A failed sealed unit is responsible. When there is depletion in the gas inside the glazing unit, it will cause the warm air in the room to escape via the window; your double glazing begins to look foggy or misty.

Misted windows

Many people who have misted windows or foggy glasses are often surprised at how expensive it is to replace the whole frame. But this replacement is totally unnecessary.

At Pelle Glazing, we’ll replace just the panes and not the frames! You’ll save more money, and your glass will be fixed.

If you are considering replacing your blown window, or to take out water between double glazing, Pelle Glazing is the right place to call. We provide professional window condensation repairs in London.

Condensation in the window

It may be hard to know if your double glazing is blown as it might be mistaken for condensation on the inside of the window. But if there’s no condensation between the two glass panes of your window, know that your unit is not faulty.

In a case where there is water between the two glass panes, it is a red flag that your unit is broken. This makes the windows look misty—a situation called blown double glazing.

Fixing condensation in the window

Be careful not to allow companies that propose drilling a small hole and having your unit refilled with gas do your repairs. Understand that moisture-induced stains on the window rarely disappear and will still be there even after paying for repairs.

Come to Pelle Glazing; we’ll fix a new pane for you and the problem will be solved.

Frequently asked questions

What causes failure of double glazed units?

Temperature change can cause expansion and contraction of the material inside the glazed unit, resulting in gas escaping from the sealed unit. Two pieces of glass with an airproof seal filled with argon gas makes up a double glazing. Damage to the seal can let out gas. Again, factors like cracked or chipped glass in the unit can cause the buildup of condensation in the glazing panel. Poorly maintained and faulty double glazed units can result in considerable heat loss in the room.

What is a sealed unit?

A sealed unit is sometimes called a DGU (double glazed unit). The edges of this unit are sealed to make the window airtight. Double glazed windows comprises of 2 glass panes, set apart by a space bar to create a vacuum. This vacuum is filled with argon gas—a poor conductor of heat. It, therefore, creates a blockade between the warm room and the cold temperature outside.

Can a leaded window be changed to clear glass?

Of course, yes! At Pelle Glazing, we convert leaded windows to clear glass sealed units or the other way round.

Can you match the same pattern for a sealed unit with lead light window pattern and a broken clear glass panel?

Sure! We can split the panels and reproduce your sealed units. The lead pattern can be remade to into the new piece of glass so that it fits your previous lead light design as before.

The inside of the glass unit is misty, and there is condensation inside the window. Can you repair this?

Yes, we can repair a sealed unit. However, we recommend that an expert window fitter do the job. At Pelle Glazing, we can repair, replace, and maintain your double glazing units of very high standards with zero damage to the frame.

What causes misted double glazing?

The main culprit of misted double glazing is a compromise in the seal between the glass panes. Some reasons are:

  • Insufficient drainage around the window. A properly installed window usually has an effective drainage system that drains off any water that collects around the frame, especially at the bottom. If the bottom edge of the glazing unit has water around it, the seal will be rapidly damaged, particularly when the water contains cleaning fluids.
  • A faulty undetected unit seal from the manufacturer. It becomes obvious when water has entered in.
  • A flexing window frame that puts pressure on the seal around the glass unit. Depending on the frame type, this can be caused by temperature changes or weather conditions.

Can a misted double glazing unit be repaired?

There’s no clearly defined solution to this. Some people believe that the only repair option is to replace the entire double glazing unit with a new one carrying a seal that’s intact. However, this option costs more. There are other suggestions out there as well.

The manufacturer or original installer should be the first point of call in a case like this. Should your window be under guarantee, then they should be replaced since misting is obviously an indication that the unit is either ill-fitted or faulty. Should the installer suggest a fix, it is entirely your choice to allow them to try this, but ensure they’ll replace your units should the fix prove abortive.

Where there’s no warranty, you can check online for help. Doing it yourself may be risky. So ensure that your window is well installed and certified and maintain them.
